I have to say I was very surprised to read in your FT Money feature “How tying the knot became so expensive” (FT Weekend, April 26) that “Laura”, a theatre producer, and her partner were asked to pay £1,500 for their celebrant.
Here in Scotland, where humanist weddings have now been legal for 20 years, and where — unlike England — celebrants are authorised to conduct legal marriage, she would expect to pay no more than a third of that.
My tip to any of your readers planning to get married is a simple one: look north!
