Martin Sandbu laments US control over the global payments system and champions EU adoption of a digital euro as a means of overcoming a perceived threat from Donald Trump (“The battle for the global payments system is under way”, Opinion, April 7). But isn’t the greater and more ominous threat from digitising money the increase in surveillance, the loss of personal privacy, and central government control over quotidian life?
