Philip Augar (Opinion, May 6) tells us that the higher education market in England lacks governance and control, and has been allowed to overstretch itself, relying on overseas students’ inflated fees. I wonder if the whole business model is flawed.

Our son recently completed a business studies degree in three years. He had an average of five hours of lectures a week and it felt like he was only there half the year. I’m pretty sure he could have completed it in two or even one year at a fraction of the cost. Admittedly he would have had less of the other “life experiences” that go hand in hand with a university education but nevertheless I’m not sure it’s good value or a good use of time.
