Last week, we had some good news about the south-west monsoon and rice. The south-west monsoon set in on Saturday, the first time it set in so early after 2009 and the first time simultaneously over Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. India is now the top producer of rice in the world, pushing China to the second spot. In a welcome feature, farmer producer organisations (FPOs) turned procurers of wheat this year, buying 40,000 tonnes. Pakistan’s internal and external problems are affecting its rice export, handing the advantage to India. The Indian Institute of Millet Research’s Nutrihub is driving a boom in millet startups.
