It’s hard to believe that Michael Hann wrote a column on Kris Kristofferson’s hit “Help Me Make It Through The Night” (The Life Of A Song, May 17) without mentioning the Grammy award-winning recording by Sammi Smith from 1970. Not only did Smith nail the intimate expectations inherent in the lyrics, but also the soulful longing and desperation of just needing someone to help you get through the night. Her version signified the marriage of two great talents. She was duly rewarded with the Grammy and “Single Of The Year” from the Country Music Association. Her rendition was later used with contextual perfection in the 2021 movie Stillwater.
