Your recent correspondence (Letters, March 22) regarding Trump Winery’s sparkling wine reminds me of a wine trade dinner I attended a few years ago in London.

The dinner was held to showcase the best and brightest from Virginia’s burgeoning wine industry. Our host, the Democrat governor Terry McAuliffe, served Trump Méthode Champenoise before the meal.

The wine trade are a notoriously thirsty bunch and it was unusual to see so many full champagne flutes hastily put to one side, each glass depleted by only the tiniest amount of fizz.

McAuliffe — a Democrat, remember — knew what he was doing. The consensus was that the wine was acidic, bitter and lacking in taste.

Who says you cannot judge a wine by its label?
