An article on May 20 wrongly suggested that around 70 per cent of all deaths among 25- to 49-year olds in the UK were so-called “deaths of despair”, from suicide, drugs, accidents or alcohol. In this age group, “deaths of despair” account for 65 per cent of a widening gap in death rates between the UK and other high-income countries for women and 47 per cent for men.
