The Congress Working Committee (CWC) on Wednesday launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his “inexplicable and unacceptable” silence regarding US President’s claim of brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan.
The CWC asserted that the PM and the Foreign Minister S Jaishankar’s failure to immediately refute this statement has dangerously internationalised the Kashmir issue and compromised India’s long-standing position that it is a bilateral matter.
In a sharp resolution, the CWC stated that the assertion by the US leader represents a “dangerous and unprecedented hyphenation of India with Pakistan,” undermining national prestige and policy. The party demanded to know why no top leader from the government has countered this claim, emphasising the potential damage to India’s established diplomatic stance.
‘What is Trump’s role?’
“For the last few days, the Congress has been asking how and why US President Donald Trump announced the ceasefire between India and Pakistan. He repeated his claims on Wednesday. PM Modi did not say anything on it. US Secretary of State Marco Runbio said that America’s role was critical and that it was because of them that this war stopped. Foreign Minister S Jaishankar does not respond to this. We are continuously asking why PM Modi and Foreign Minister are not answering what the role of America is,” said Congress leader Jairam Ramesh.
Party spokesperson Pawan Khera said that Trump has equated India with Pakistan – a comparison that is unacceptable to the Congress. “He has equated the Prime Minister of India with the Prime Minister of Pakistan. This may be acceptable to the BJP. It is not acceptable to the Congress,” Khera said.
The CWC insisted that the government’s silence raises serious questions about its handling of national security issues and its willingness to protect India’s bilateral framework on Kashmir. The party reiterated its demand for an immediate all-party meeting chaired by PM Narendra Modi to discuss this critical issue and called for transparency and accountability from the government.
